JBS Summer Games: Sailing

Is it possible to find scrapping inspiration in a sport that involves boats racing in the water? Of course! Whether it's the colorful graphic designs on the sails, the clean lines and shapes, or the water itself, sailing provides many ideas that can translate to your page!

I chose to use the simple shape of the sails as a main design element on my layout. Triangles are popular right now and super easy to create. First, I just used my trusty square punch to create several squares of patterned paper:

Then, using a ruler and exacto knife,  I cut each square on the diagonal to form a triangle:
I lined up various triangles (cut from Wren and Magpie papers) in the upper left corner of my page, using them as arrows to direct the eye though the page:
"Here We Go" by Lisa Dickinson
I stitched down the center line of the triangle rows with my sewing machine and then gently bent up the corners to add a little bit of dimension:
To keep with the sailing theme, I lightly splattered some watered-down Spice Tin ink around the page. I like the casual abstractness it adds to the design and it helps to tone down the linear feel of all the straight lines.

My title is die-cut from the Blueprint paper and combined with some of the new Grey Skinny Alpha stickers.

Here you can see a tiny new element that is causing a big stir in the scrapbooking world - tiny Self-Adhesive Rhinestone Stars - available in red, black, and clear.

Also used are a couple sheets of the next extension to our perforated papers line . . .

Die Cut Stencil Paper - Striking in Kraft!

Stephanie Howell once again brings us simple brilliance in her inspiration.  Stepahnie has used the kraft version of the Stencil DieCut Paper.  She backed it with a sheet of the Wren Mini Pattern Sheet that showed through with nice variety.  The alpha sheet also worked nicely to highlight her friends' names.  Finally, she used the circle stickers from a JBS HodgePodge Sticker Sheet to create a scalloped border around her photo.  Thanks for the inspiration Stephanie!

Technique to Try: Subtle Layering

I just love the layering Becky Novacek used in this layout.  She used a simple design to create the layout, but added a subtle layer of papers and tags under the photos.  The layers barely peek through the edges, but matt the photos with interest and texture at the same time.  The piece of the patterned paper Compile adds a striking background for the title.

Next time you are looking to matt your photos - try a subtle layering effect like this instead!

More Marvelous Magpie!

Here are a few more projects using Magpie!

A lovely layout from Lisa Dickinson:

Lisa used her JBS Silhouette Whimsy cut to create the negative image here.  Don't you love how the Magpie Quilted Stickers flow down the page?  It's so delicate and pretty and reminds me of confetti!

supplies:

Betsy also used a bit of technology on her page below.  The JBS Seal images are digital, but you could create a similar effect with the Seal Stamp!

Each Seal center is a space for an embellishment or photo.  The bottom seal houses a ribbon made with the Blue Ribbon Clear Stamp.

Supplies:

Magpie Nest Patterned Paper
Hodge Podge Stickers Memo, Magpie, Souvenier
Claudine Hellmuth Studio Sticky Back Canvas
Vintage Trim

Betsy used a digital image to create her basic design, but the Seal Stamp can be used to create a similar effect!

Journal What's Inspiring You

Like everyone, I'm constantly in search of what inspires me to continue to to strive to be a better person, a better wife and mom, and maybe a better "artist"... My husband and I took the time to watch the film Gandhi this past weekend, and just like we had heard - it's a life changer. You can't see that, really take it in, and not be changed. I now have two books about the man and his teachings in my queue for reading.

For my layout, I loved layering a bunch of the media {all of jenni's yummy paints and inks} together to create the background for my title - then using the stencil paper to add texture medium for the main bit of it.

I also highlighted the texture in the butterflies by brushing over it with the speckled eggs ink pad.
Here's a list of supplies if you're interested in creating something similar!

Have you journaled what's inspiring you? ~ Leah

Thank you Leah!  I'm definitely inspired!  Leah loved using Louise Nelson's splatter technique using Jenni Bowlin for Ranger Paints - You can find that video tutorial here!

Guest Star Paige Evans!

Today we have an awesomely talented and creative guest to share her creations with our latest release, Magpie.  A big JBS welcome to Paige Evans!

On this first one she's made an amazing concentric border around her page using a medallion punch trimmed in half mixed with some tab stickers.  This is indeed an all boy page for her sweet boy with all the trucks and bikes and the bulldog with oh so much character.

This layout is simply amazing to me.  What a creative use of the alphabet stamp.  And how much patience did it take to create?  But I think the coloring must have been great fun too.

Notice how she even pop dotted a few of the words.  Details details!

And here is one more fun mix of her little guy at 17 months.  Love the line of button stickers down the center and the descriptive adjectives.  Thanks for the inspiration Paige!

My very first job when I was 16 years old (almost 11 years ago now - time flies!) was at a local scrapbooking store in Redmond, WA called Yesterdays. I've been hooked to scrapping ever since! Sometimes I think about what my life would be like now if I hadn't walked in and asked for an application (which they didn't have, they just took my phone number!) because so much of my life has revolved around scrapbooking since then... I work full-time from home for Northridge Publishing - they make the magazines Scrapbook Trends , CARDS , Simply Handmade, Bead Trends , Cricut, and Create: Idea Books. Aside from scrapbooking, I love spending time with my husband of five years, Chris, playing with our one-and-a-half year old son Fox, getting ready for our daughter to join our family in July, and entertaining our menagerie which consists of a dog, cat, rabbit, and chinchilla. I love to create on a daily basis and enjoy dabbling in everything from fine arts (painting, drawing, printmaking, etc.), to bookbinding, photography, graphic design, and more!

Magpie in Mini From from Natalie Elphinstone!

Natalie found a sweet and easy way to use the Magpie Mini Pattern Sheet to create her own great mini!

This sounds so easy and so fun - great for a class or to take to a crop!

Here's how Natalie described her process and the album:

I simply cut apart the "Magpie Mini Pattern Sheet" to use as the base pages for this album, and then decorated them with a variety of embellishments.

By including a couple of the Printed Pockets it allowed me a place to tuck away the abundance of journaling that I wanted to add without cluttering the miniature pages. And whilst this album is fairly sturdy with it's chipboard covers, I do love the idea that I'll be able to protect it further by keeping it inside the Cigar Box. Brilliant!

This is all about the day we celebrated my youngest daughter's dedication. After church we had lunch in the park - with plenty of hugs from all the friends and family. And yes, that it my eldest daughter dressed in a Dora the
Explorer apron and chef's hat!! It was her birthday the week before so she received her fair share of presents too.

thank you Natalie for giving us a GREAT idea for using the mini pattern sheet as a mini album base and then adding all the fun embellishments!  This will be perfect for me to bring to my next crop!

Briana Makes the Jester Punch Shine!

Today we have a delightful CHA Winter layout from Briana Johnson.  This one really makes the new fiskars punches shine!  The bottom is a rainbow created with the Jester Border Punch and the top is a cloud filled sky created with the Grandma's Doily Punch paired with a simple scalloped circle punch.  Add a couple tags made stickers off the Hodgepodge sheet and sweet!

And how clever is this?  Briana kept the negative bits from punching the layout and made this thank you card with the creative banners.  Clever!  Pair it with the new Dictionary Stamp for a quick and easy card made from scraps.  Thanks for the inspiration Briana!
